The State Audit Office presented performance audit report on air pollution reduction measures caused by traffic emissions throughout Tbilisi at the joint session of the parliamentary Environment Protection Committee and working group of the Budget and Finance Committee reviewing SAO’s reports.
The audit report focuses on air pollution in the capital caused by emissions of motor cars. The study revealed that in 2016, 76 % of cars in the capital did not pass technical inspection and the patrol police had no access to the information system for monitoring the relevant technical inspection and thus had not been informed which transport had not passed compulsory inspection.
Recommendations for carrying out air pollution reduction measures were given to several state bodies, including Transport Department of the Tbilisi City Hall, the Patrol Police Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture. Among issued recommendations, the one concerning the improvement of monitoring of the technical condition of microbuses as well as development and renovation of municipal transport in the city, as well as introduction of ecologically clean alternative transport; elimination of the low level of administering of periodic technical inspection, review of small fines in case of not having technical inspection and etc were also discussed.
Auditees expressed their opinion on recommendations and findings of the Audit Office - Transport Department of the Tbilisi City Hall, the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture, representatives of the Patrol Police Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, as well as the members of the Environmental Protection and Budget and Finance Committee of the Parliament.

Head of Economic Activities Audit Department Tornike Shermadini presented the report to the working group. The meeting was attended by the Deputy Auditor General Eka Gazadze, and the Head of General State Services Audit Department Giorgi Kekelishvili.
